AMU. Aligarh Students at protest over a non Jinnah issue
|
Who is Jinnah? It was an arrow in air by my grand daughter, a kid of class 7th.

Protesting Students of AMU. Aligarh at Bab-e- Syed |
This question left me in hesitancy, how to explain, who was
Jinnah. I asked her, how you came to know the name of Jinnah. From TV Channels,
News Papers, posts on Time Line of Facebook and even on Whats App.She replied.
The jinn of Jinnah were alive in Aligarh. Very sad….
Start of Controversy
This question was
In the light of rescent
controversy generated when BJP MP (of Aligarh)
Mr.Satish Gautam objected to the presence of a portrait of Mohammad Ali Jinnah
at Aligarh Muslim university Students Union.
Responding to the letter, the AMU authorities
and the student union president called the portrait “just a historical
preservation of the university’s legacy”.
AMU Students Union |
“His portrait has been there on the walls of
the student union hall since 1938. It was a pre-Independence era (portrait)
much before the Partition.”

Md.Ali Jinnah |
Jinnah’s portrait
was hanging among a galaxy of luminaries like Mahatma Gandhi, Maulana Azad,
Jawaharlal Nehru, CV Raman, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, VV Giri and APJ Abdul
Kalam, he added. “All these personalities were the life members of the
AMUSU.”
AMU was conferring
life membership on eminent personalities since 1920 and Mahatama Gandhi was the
first life member of AMUSU. “Their portraits add to the rich heritage of
undivided India and no one ever raised this issue before.”
University public relations
in-charge Professor M Shafey Kidwai
clarified
that AMU neither glorifies Jinnah nor
condones his ideology. "People who supported his ideology have left India
long ago and there is no point in stoking an unnecessary controversy in the
name of the person who is not liked by anyone in the varsity campus," he
said. "The
university makes its stand clear that these portraits are archives because they
are a part of our history and nothing else," he said.
Mohammed Ali Jinnah was born on 25
December 1876 in Karachi, now in Pakistan, but then part of British-controlled
India
Jinnah studied at Bombay University
and at Lincoln's Inn in London. He then ran a successful legal practice in
Bombay. He was already a member of the Indian National Congress, when he joined
the Muslim League in 1913.

Mohd Ali Jinnah and Mahatma M.K.Gandhi |
The league had formed a few years
earlier to represent the interests of Indian Muslims in a predominantly Hindu
country, and by 1916 he was elected its president.
In 1920, the Indian
National Congress launched a movement of non-cooperation to boycott all aspects
of British rule. Jinnah opposed this policy and resigned from the congress.
There were by now profound differences between the congress and the Muslim
League.

Jinnah had always
believed that Hindu-Muslim unity was possible, but reluctantly came to the view
that partition was necessary to safeguard the rights of Indian Muslims.
His insistence on this issue through
negotiations with the British government resulted in the partition of India and
the formation of the state of Pakistan on 14 August 1947. This occurred against
a backdrop of widespread violence between Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs, and a vast
movement of populations between the new states of Pakistan and India in which
hundreds of thousands died.
From a talk of Prof Irfan Habib with Manimugdha S Sharma
There were two aspects to Jinnah: one was Partition and the
other was opposition to British rule from the time of Gopalkrishna Gokhale.
Very few people know that he was the defence counsel of Bal Gangadhar Tilak (in
a sedition case) and won him the case against the British government in 1916.
It’s a
part of our history. Even if somebody wants to be rowdy about it, history can’t
be changed. In fact, Bhagat Singh should be a national hero for Pakistan as
much as he is for us.
Professor Ali Nadeem Rezavi,Chairman history department, said the entire incident
was perhaps designed to embarrass Hamid Ansari Sheb, since his Muslim identity
has been used against him earlier too. He said it was shameful that the
university failed to honour its distinguished alumnus because of this ruckus.
Pointing out that Jinnah's portrait
is mounted even in a Shimla institute, Sabarmati Ashram, Bombay High court and
other places in the country, he asked why the AMU alone was being targeted
Clash over Jinnah’s photo at AMU
Soon
after the letter was sent, members of right-wing organisation Hindu Yuva Vahini
(HYV), on Wednesday, barged into the varsity, shouting slogans against the
hanging of Jinnah’s portrait and briefly clashed with Aligarh Muslim University
students, according to news agency ANI. The clashes reportedly injured 41
people, including 28 students and 13 policemen.

Eyewitnesses said activists from right-wing
groups allegedly thrashed the security guards of AMU when they tried to prevent
them from entering the campus. The university students alleged that many of
them, including AMUSU president M.A. Usmani, were thrashed by the protesters
during the clash. They also claimed that the protesters, after being initially
detained, were allowed to leave the police station.
They were
then taken away to a police station from where they were later
"rescued" by other protesters, AMU student union members said,
reported ANI. The whole campus has become a cantonment with
heavy deployment of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), Rapid Action Force
(RAF) and the local police. The dharna and demonstrations continue as Hindutva
groups are adamant on their demand which is being opposed by the AMU students
and teachers.
The AMU students alleged that the protesters were
from Hindu Yuva Vahini, and were allowed to leave a police station after being
initially detained.
Hamid
Ansari former Vice Presibent of India was at the time barely 100 meters at the
University Guest House.
The AMU
Students' Union (AMUSU) alleged that violence on the campus was a
"deliberate and pre-planned attempt" to attack former vice president
Hamid Ansari, who was at that time barely 100 metres away at the university
guest house, from where the violence erupted.
Ansari, an alumnus as
well as former vice-chancellor of the AMU, was to be accorded its lifetime
membership on Wednesday. A function to grant life membership of
the student union to former vice president Hamid Ansari and he has to deliver a Lecture on topic - "India
Has failed to establish a pluralistic society" in Kennedy House
Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on 2nd May' 2018. was called off and he returned to Delhi.

Hamid Ansar- Former Vice President of Indi |
Timing Raises Questions: Hamid Ansari Supports AMU Students’ Demand
Breaking
his silence, former vice president M Hamid Ansari supported AMU students'
demand for action against intruders who created a ruckus on the varsity campus
over the issue of Jinnah’s on 2 May, when he was present there for an event. He
said their peaceful stir against the “transgression” is commendable.
Hamid Ansari,
who has studied at AMU, said the disruption, its precise timing, and the
“excuse manufactured for justifying it”, raises questions.

'Azadi' slogans in purported AMU video: Even as the indefinite dharna and boycott of
academic activities by students in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) continued, a
video of protesting students shouting slogans of "Azadi", apparently
against right-wing groups, went viral on social media.
AMUSTA in a protest |
AMU PRO
Professor Shafey Kidwai said, "Students were on an indefinite protest at
the Bab-e-Syed gate of the university, and were raising the slogan - Bhagwa
Rang aur Aatank se Azadi. These are not
anti-India slogans, and do not relate to the unity, integrity and sovereignty
of India."
Wounded Maskoor Ahmd Usmani President AMUS Union |

Mohd Fahad Secretory -AMUS Union
AMU

I used to think and still think that partition shouldn’t
have happened and that Jinnah and Nehru are the two to be blamed for this, they
were power hungry, so they shared us among themselves to rule over, and that
Gandhi could have prevented this partition as every Indian regardless of
culture or religion used to follow him but instead he let Nehru divide us.
Originally he never wanted this but he had a dream to make Nehru the PM which
caused us this partition.
